Electric vehicles
EV MOT — fixed price, no emissions test.
Electric cars test as Class IV like any other car. Heavy electric vans up to 4.25 t test as Class VII from 1 June 2026 — book through the right class page below.
Honest EV pricing
Class IV EV (cars, small vans) £54. Class VII heavy EV (3.5–4.25 t) £58.60. Both higher than petrol/diesel because the extra battery weight wears brakes and suspension faster — but the price is up-front, no VAT, no surprises.
Experienced with EVs
EVs come through the workshop regularly. The MOT inspection is the same checklist as any car — we don't open up the high-voltage system.
No emissions test
EVs are exempt — but every other part of the MOT applies in full.
Which MOT class
How EVs are tested
DVSA doesn't have a separate "EV" MOT class. Your EV is tested in the same class as the petrol or diesel equivalent — book through the page below that matches your vehicle.
Electric cars
£54Class IV
Class IV MOT — same checklist as a petrol/diesel car (no emissions test, EVs are exempt). Priced higher than petrol/diesel (£45) due to the extra battery weight wearing brakes and suspension faster.

£54Class IV
Class IV, same checklist as a small petrol/diesel van. Same EV pricing as cars for the same reason — heavier than the petrol/diesel version.

£58.60Class VII
From 1 June 2026, fully electric and other zero-emission vans from 3,500 kg up to 4,250 kg are tested as a standard Class 7 MOT — no extra heavy-goods (HGV) test like before. We're set up for these.

£29Class I / II
Class I / II, same as petrol bikes. Brake test, lights, frame, tyres — the full inspection.
Book through this pageNew from 1 June 2026 — heavy electric vans up to 4.25 t
Until now, electric vans over 3.5 t had to be tested as heavy goods vehicles because of the extra weight of the battery pack. From 1 June 2026 DVSA treats them as a standard Class 7 MOT up to 4.25 tonnes. Priced at £58.60 — slightly higher than a petrol/diesel Class 7 because the extra battery weight wears brakes and suspension faster, and the inspection takes longer.

What we look at on an EV MOT
- Brakes — including regen handover and the friction balance EVs are heavy on
- High-voltage system safety — orange cabling intact, no exposed conductors, isolation correct
- Tyres — EVs run hotter and heavier; we check load rating and wear pattern
- Suspension & steering — heavier vehicles, faster wear
- Lights, wipers, mirrors, structure, VIN — full Class IV/VII checklist
- No emissions test — EVs are exempt from the tailpipe sniff
