MOT class

Most horseboxes test as Class 7

The class goes on the design gross weight on your V5C (field F.2) — the plated weight, not what it happens to weigh on the day with the horses in.

3,001–3,500 kg — Class 7. Nearly every two-horse box is here: Ducato, Boxer, Relay, Master and Movano chassis are all plated at 3,500 kg.
3,000 kg and under — Class 4. Less common, because the payload gets tight once you have added the body, tack, water and the horses.
Over 3,500 kg — an HGV annual test, not an MOT. See below.

Anything over 3,500 kg is an HGV and needs a testing station set up for it, so put the registration in — we read the weight from the DVSA record and tell you straight away.

Heavier horseboxes need an HGV test at a DVSA Authorised Testing Facility (ATF). The nearest to us is the Thamesdown Bus Depot in Swindon, which runs an on-site DVSA ATF.
