What class is your vehicle?

Every vehicle type has an MOT class and an EU category. Check yours below — field J “European vehicle category”on your V5C logbook gives the category (M1, N1, L3…).

• MotorcycleClass 1 / 2· L1–L7— Mopeds, scooters and motorbikes.
• CarClass 4· M1— Passenger cars up to 8 passenger seats — includes SUVs and 4×4s.
• Small vanClass 4· N1 (under 3,000 kg)— Car-sized vans — Transit Connect, Caddy, Berlingo.
• Large vanClass 7· N1 (3,000–3,500 kg)— Full-size panel vans — Transit, Sprinter, Master, Crafter.
• Luton vanClass 7· N1 / N2— Box vans with the peak over the cab, up to 3,500 kg.
• MinibusClass 4· M1— Up to 8 passenger seats (not counting the driver) — £45.
• MinibusClass 4· M2— 9 to 12 passenger seats — £57.
• MinibusClass 5L· M2— 13 to 16 passenger seats — £59. A panel van is NOT a minibus.
• Motorhome◀Class 4· M1 (motor caravan)— Coachbuilt and van-conversion motor caravans.
• HorseboxClass 4· N1 / N2 (up to 3,500 kg)— 3.5-tonne horseboxes — heavier ones need an HGV test centre.
• ElectricClass 4 or 7· Same as the body type— EVs test in the same class as the petrol/diesel equivalent — electric car = Class 4, heavy electric van = Class 7.
